In about 1810, Isaac Eddy established an engraving shop in Greenbush, Vermont. This was the beginning of an improbable yet very successful map, globe and illustrated book industry in rural Vermont over the next forty years. Eddy's best-known apprentice was Lewis Robinson, who achieved considerable success as a mapmaker.
George White was another apprentice, although very little is known about him. While Eddy and Robinson are discussed in Ristow's American Maps and Mapmakers, there is no mention of White at all. His entire cartographic output was apparently confined to this map and a companion map of New Hampshire.
The map -- a very small wall map issued with rollers -- has a basic, almost primitive, feel. Perhaps this accounted for White's apparent lack of success as a mapmaker. OCLC notes a single holding of the map: Clements Library at University of Michigan. An interesting and scarce Vermont map from an unheralded member of the "Greenbush group."
An uncommon map. OCLC cites two holdings: University of Vermont and the Connecticut State Library. The Antique Map Price Record noted only one sale of the map during its run from 1983 through 2011.
