This whimsical and good-natured map presents a student's-eye view of the Bryn Mawr campus in 1928. The full title is "Here is the Bryn Mawr Campus - All Its Wonders Great & Small…Twill Fold to Fit Your Pocket - or Unfold to Fit Your Wall."
Activities abound -- dancing around the Maypole, playing tennis and field hockey, and a Midsummer's Night Dream is presented outdoors. A compass rose features the college's seal. Numerous campus buildings are depicted, including Goodhart Hall, the Old Library, Taylor Hall, Radnor, Merion, Rockefeller and the Deanery. There are references to College traditions ("In this green wood, every fourth year do Robin Hood and his men appear") and there are "in" jokes ("the dogfish out for a breath of fresh air" at Dalton Hall).
While the map's title suggests it was a folding map, there is no evidence that this example was ever folded and it appears to have been produced originally as a framed map.
The map's authors are only identified on the map as "L.K." and "D.W." and referred to as "del," or delineavit, in a tiny box at the lower right. Further research may reveal the identities of these budding Bryn Mawr cartographers from nearly a century ago.
The map is as rare as it is charming... we have been unable to locate another example anywhere, including in the online Bryn Mawr library catalogue.
