This is the second edition of the first guidebook to focus on the Waterville Valley. The author, Arthur Lewis Goodrich, was an 1874 Harvard graduate and a founding member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. He and his son were prominent early trail makers in the Waterville Valley. The first edition of the guide was published in 1892 and contained 29 pages.
Accompanying the guide is Map of the Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. This small folding map (measuring about 9 x 7”) is one of the earliest maps of the Valley. It is bounded, roughly, by Mt. Kancamagus to the north, the Tripyramids to the east, Black Mountain to the south and Mt. Tecumseh to the west. The same area was mapped on a larger scale by Goodrich in a separately issued map in 1915.
Goodrich’s guidebook had a subsequent edition in 1916. Like the first edition, this second edition is uncommon in the trade and has no Rare Book Hub history.
