[Washington, DC.]: U.S. Coast Survey, [1879.]. Sheet size: 11 ¼ x 20 ½." Image size: 6 1/8 x 19 ¼." Original fold lines. Some wrinkling of the the paper. Recent hand color. Very good. Item #3731

Art and utility come together in this image of three coastal views of the Boston area. Three approach views -- two of Boston Harbor and one centered on Minot Ledge Light -- are depicted one above the other on a single sheet.

The views appeared in a coast pilot published by the U.S. Coast Survey in 1879; they were designed to help mariners visually confirm that they were where they thought they were. The Boston harbor views include many prominent landmarks, including Nantasket Hill, Fort Warren, the State House, Boston Light, the Brewster Islands and the Bunker Hill Monument. The other view includes Scituate Tower, Minot Ledge Light House and Cohasset.
