Eastern Passages to China, Sheet I.

London. 1845. About 24 ½ x 37 ½,” plus margins. Modest amounts of light waterstaining and soiling. Repaired tears (less than 3” each) from left edge. A couple of small puncture-type wounds, also near the left edge. Overall, good for a chart that obviously was used as intended. Item #3696

Rolled chart by Captain James Horsburgh, hydrographer to the East India Company, showing the Java Sea, Strait of Macassar, southern part of Borneo, part of Celebes, part of Java, and the islands of Bally, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, and the Sandalwood. The chart includes numerous soundings and two possible routes to China. There are four insets: Sketch of Bally Strait, Sketch of Lombock Strait, Sketch of Sapy Strait, and Plan of Allass Strait from Observations Made by James Horsburgh in 1796. Text at top dedicates the chart to the "Commanders & Officers of the Honble. East India Companys Ships..."

First issued in 1824, this state includes additions to 1845. Uncommon; OCLC locates three holdings of the 1824 state, three of the 1848 state, but none for this state with additions to 1845.
