Laurens was a wealthy South Carolina merchant and rice planter. He served as the fifth president of the Continental Congress from November, 1777 to December, 1778. This portarit by John Norman appeared in the September, 1784 issue of The Boston Magazine. It is the only contemporary portrait of Laurens to appear in an American magazine and therefore likely one of the few likenesses of Laurens to have been published in 18th century America.
