Moses Greenleaf, Maine's noted early geographer, produced this detailed compilation of the state's geography, commerce and educational system as a follow-up to his 1816 work, "A Statistical View of the District of Maine." Williamson notes that in 1830 the Maine Legislature "authorized the purchase of 400 copies of survey and maps at $16 per set and appropriated $500 in consideration of the author's expense and exertions in their publication."
