Birch-Bark Souvenirs – Poems.

North Conway, N.H. Published by James Riley. Printed by Chas. Holbrook & Co., Prs., Portland [ME]. Ca. 1880-1900. String tied. Printed on extremely thin birch bark. 3 ¼ x 2 ¾.”. A bit of wear to the wrappers. Very good. Item #3712

A small collection of mostly White Mountains-themed poems, most notable for being printed entirely on birch bark. Obviously geared to the tourist trade, the work is very much in the style of Charles Lummis, who began publishing his very successful “Birch Bark Poems” in 1878.

The poems include:

Birch Bark
Among the Clouds
Sonnet. The Old Man of the Mountain
Sunset on Profile Lake
Mt. Washington
Canoe Song (continued on recto of rear wrapper)

OCLC notes four records with this title with a total of five copies. The copy that most closely resembles the present copy is held by Western Michigan University (OCLC Accession No: 123174396). That example, however, notes printing by the Press of J.A. Seitz and Son. The present example notes printing by Chas. Holbrook & Co. of Portland, Maine. An apparently unrecorded variant.
