The Lure of the Land of Hiawatha. Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Marquette, MI. Printed by Ann Arbor Press. 1935. A bit of light soiling, minor edge wear and typical page-turning use. Small remnant of a paper sticker of some sort at lower right on first interior page. Folded map is very good. Item #3677

This magazine-style promotional piece was issued by the Upper Peninsula Development Bureau in the mid-1930s. OCLC suggests three annual issues: 1935, 1936 and 1937. Based on the UP Fair dates noted in the publication, August 20-25, this is the 1935 edition. (In addition, the large folding map has 1935 as the copyright date.) In addition to various articles and advertisements, the publication contains 17 full-page, color pictorial maps of the counties of the Upper Peninsula. Laid in to the magazine is a large folding pictorial map of the UP, again, in color. The folding map, titled "Land of Hiawatha," measures 20 1/2 x 37 1/2." The pictorial maps are in the style of Ruth Taylor White, but according to credits on page 80: "The art work is by Frank R. Harper, Staff Artist." A great UP promotional piece, with a fantastic cache of pictorial maps. OCLC notes five institutional holders of this item under two accession numbers: 12890483 and 6348497.
