Map of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Scale 1/100,000.

Boston. Forbes Co., 1887. Folding map now laid down on archival tissue, closing a tear at the upper left corner, fold separations and filling a few small intersection losses. Several areas of staining, consistent with the map's use on the trail. The front and back sections of the map folder (printed on heavy stock) are separated, stained and heavily worn at the edges. About 28 x 22 1/4." Item #3472

The Appalachian Mountain Club was founded in 1886 in Boston. In 1887 the Club produced this map, its first separately issued pocket map. (A smaller version of the map, with a scale of 1/150,000, was also issued in the same year.) Printed on the inside of the map's folder behind the map itself are "Explanations," which "denote the characters of the slopes in the immediate vicinity of each point..." The "Explanations" also outline a cumbersome alphanumeric system by which "[t]he State of New Hampshire has been conveniently divided into sections." Cobb, Maps of New Hampshire to 1900: 418. Apt, Maps of the White Mountains of New Hampshire (Exhibition Catalogue): Map 20.
