This Philadelphia almanac is for 1784, the first year after American independence from Great Britain was officially recognized. The almanac belonged to Thomas McKean, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. McKean, who served as a delegate from Delaware to the First and Second Continental Congresses, was a strong proponent of independence. His signature, "Tho. McKean," appears just above "Almanac" on the title page and there are several short notations within the almanac noting weather events, household matters and the coming and going of guests, all of which emphasize the important day-to-day role played by almanacs in early America.
