New Haven, NY. U.S. Map Company. [ca. 1870s.]. Maps soiled and rubbed. One small piece (VT? NH?) in facsimile. New archival box with original (and stained) label affixed. Good. Item #3671
An uncommon jigsaw puzzle map of the United States on one side and the world on the other. From the box label we have the publisher as the U.S. Map Company (with "U.S." probably an abbreviation for "Union Sectional") of New Haven, Oswego County, New York. Below the neat line at the lower right of the U.S. map is "D. & M.C. Wiggins." We were unable to locate another example of this map at OCLC or in a Google search. The closest we could come was a listing by a colleague for another "The Silent Teacher! Patent Improved Sectional Map of the United States" published by Union Sectional Map Company of New Haven, NY. That map was "Drawn, engraved and printed by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." The colleague dates the map as 1860. And a listing by the History Musem of Western Vrginia describes a two-sided jigsaw puzzle map with the world on one side and New York state on the other. Dated as 1876, that puzzle also links the Wiggin and Colton firms. Further research is need on the Wiggins' role in early puzzle maps of the United States. This map, apparently unrecorded, may be a part of the puzzle.
