An Almanack, for the Year of Our Lord and Savior Christ, 1779...

Newburyport [Mass.]: Printed and Sold by John Mycall, and Draper & Folsom of Boston -- Sold also by the Shopkeepers... [1778.]. Paper has darkened considerably and their is occasional staining and a couple of ink notations. Loss to the lower forecorner of the first leaf costing a few words on both sides. Trimmed close at all edges but with no resulting loss of text. Page with April calendar has an area of faint impression. Overall, good-ish. Item #3657

This Revolutionary War-era almanac contains two pointed fables for the times, one titled "Addressed to Statesmen and Kings," the other "The Danger of exorbitant Taxes." Other content includes a two-page article, "The grand Pilgrimage to Mecca described." Also, on the medical/personal care beat, are short "receipts" for curing jaundice, dropsy and freckles. The calendar pages include notations for important dates associated with the transition from colonies to independent nation: for example, next to July 3-5 is "O! GLORIOUS Period! American Independence began 177_." (The "6" was apparently dropped in a typesetting error.) This is an example of -- as described by O'Neal -- "[t]he very rare variant issue with John spelled in full in the imprint rather than just the initial J." Evans, American Bibliography: 15809. Drake, Almanacs of the United States: 3277, locating two copies. O'Neal, Early American Almanacs: 328.
