A relatively early, large scale US Coast Survey chart of the area surrounding Dix Island off Sprucehead in the Muscle Ridge Channel. The scale is 1:15,000 -- one inch equals about .2 nautical miles. At the time this chart was prepared, Dix Island was a major granite quarrying site; granite from the island was shipped to many locations on the East coast. Among the buildings graced by Dix Island granite are the Treasury Building in Washington, DC and post offices in New York and Philadelphia. The chart also depicts numerous surrounding islands, including Whitehead, Sprucehead, Grafton, Pleasant, Hewell's, Andrew's, Birch and the Ponds (Little and Great). Many topographic features are named, buoys and lights are indicated and hundreds of soundings are given on this richly detailed chart.
