Plan of the Country from the Landing Place with the Encampmts. and Marches of the Troops under Major General Abercrombie to the Attack of Ticonderoga.

[Edinburgh.]: From the August, 1758 issue. 1758. Small hole in upper right blank margin and close margin at lower right; otherwise very good. Item #3618

A samll and highly contemporary map of Major General Abercromby's unsuccessful attack on Fort Carillon at Ticonderoga. The map depicts the area between Crown Point and the head of Lake George, identifying various camps and rafts of guns, as well as the location of Connecticut and Massachusetts Provincials. Abercromby's attack, such as it was, occurred on July 8, 1758; presumably the Magazine was published in the first week of September, 1758, suggesting a turnaround of less than two months to get the information about the battle to Edinburgh and have the map produced. The maps related to this battle appearing in Schwartz's The French and Indian War 1754-1763 were published more than a dozen years later (See Figures 63 & 64.) A very scarce map. Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 110. Phillips, A List of Maps of America: p. 851. Not in Sellers & Van Ee, Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies, 1750-1789.
